An honorable prince. A jaded assassin. Can they work together to catch a pirate?

Gerard lost his birthright in his small island kingdom when he married the court minstrel. He fled to the only place that offered protection from his father and his vengeful local deity--the service of the High Priestess.

Unfortunately, his superior officer, Silveo, takes an instant disliking to Gerard. Silveo has a reputation for cruelty, cunning, and a biting wit. He's a minority species, and rumors claim that he was once an assassin, who clawed his way to power from a childhood of poverty and abuse.

In spite of their differences, the Priestess insists that Gerard and Silveo cooperate to destroy the charismatic pirate, Gwain, and his mysterious organization, the Guild of the Cowry Catchers. Gwain has been killing off the Temple Police for years, and he seems likely to make a swift end of Gerard...if Silveo doesn't do it first.

Warning This story includes sexual scenes and situations.

This omnibus includes all 5 books in the Guild of the Cowry Catchers series.

I got this book for free, then forgot about it for a while. When I finally started to read it, I didn't remember anything about it and, frankly, wondered what in the world I had been thinking to download it at all. But I kept up with it since it was written well and I needed something to read. And then it sort of sucked me in. Yes, it does have its down-sides. It's full of slavery, gross social inequality, child prostitution, (non-graphic) rape -- you name something bad that can happen and it will most likely be in this book. It is full of more deus-ex-machina escapes than I have ever seen in 1 work of fiction. And then there's the fact that this is obviously not set on Earth, but is full of Earth names for animals since, it seems, there are foxes all over the universe and they'll always be called foxes. BUT the story is gripping. You care about what happen to the characters. You can't help but love Silveo, and Gerard is... well, he's inherently good in a world where almost no one is, so he's at least likeable. Mind you, when I got to the end of the book and it had a preview for the next book set in this world, I was not at all interested. Enough with the pain and torture, thanks. This books ends on an up note and there is a lot of good in it, but there's just as much darkness and pain and desperation that was palatable only because of the aforementioned amazing and improbable escapes. So, no, it's not perfect, but the 5 stars I've given it reflect how much I enjoyed the story and the characters.

The Guild of the Cowry Catchers a story of pirates and Panamindorah Complete 5Book Series edition by Abigail Hilton Romance eBooks Reviews

Everyone seemed to love these books. I thought they were OK, but I had trouble getting really engaged in them. I didn't find myself affected by the relationships or tragedies much at all (the main romance didn't really ever click for me.

It isn't all that hard to get me crying over a book, and my eyes were dry through this one. I also found myself bored at the end.

I suspect that if you're a big fan of the animal people (I am sure there is a name for them, and I know they are popular with Anime and Manga fans) you will love this. For regular and frequent readers of fantasy, you might find it a bit lacking.
I was skeptical when I started listening to Abbie's podcast because I'm not usually into reading about "people/animals" but you discover quickly that this aspect of the world is a fully thought-out, integrated piece of the narrative that plays a key role in the development of the characters. Do not be fooled by the cheerful cover into thinking that this is a peppy kid-friendly story throughout. I would give this an R-rating, at least. Perhaps NC-17. Sexual themes, dark themes, violence, nudity, etc. In other words, grown-up stuff. (For young adult-appropriate material, head on over to The Prophet of Panamindorah, written in the same universe as Cowry Catchers.)

This story is a wonderfully addictive novel of two people who are complete opposites in all that they are and do, their attempts at doing what's "right" (or at least right for them), screwing it all up massively, and learning to live with the consequences and each other. It does not read like a 300,000 word story might, and by the end you will be wishing there were more.

I rarely am this impressed and engrossed by a novel, but I can whole-heartedly recommend this to any adult who loves dark, steamy, dangerous, action-filled stories. Buy the series in print, and for a real treat (free, too!), you can see professional illustrations of the first two books, and listen to a full-cast audio drama version of the first three books by going to [...]
A thoroughly enjoyable series that often kept me up past my bedtime. The characters are engaging and memorable. At some point in the first book, I had already figured out what the rough contours of the overarching plot would be, but there were many twists and turns in how that plot played out, making it constantly interesting.

I felt that at times, the balance of action and introspection was a bit off - too heavily on the latter. Much of book three felt a bit like the arctic journey portion of Ursula K. LeGuinn's Left Hand of Darkness - two characters isolated in the wilderness, trying to figure out who they really are. Not a bad thing (and Left Hand of Darkness is one of my favourite books of all time), just noticeably different in pacing from the other books.

It's been a few weeks since I read the series and I'm still thinking about the characters. Overall, highly recommended.
This is a review of the audio "Guild of the Cowry Catchers." It is narrated by Abigail Hilton and various voice actors that bring the individual characters to life. The world of Panamindorah is a world rich in history and intrigue. The story begins with Gerald, a grishnard (ex) prince finding his place in the world with his bride, Thessalyn. He's at odds with the Admiral of the Temple Ships, Siveo.

Silveo doesn't trust Gerard because of his genteel upbringing in court. Gerard is not sure how to classify Silveo except that he is dangerous. Because of Gerard's heroism, the chief priestess, Morchella, gives him the position of the Captain of the Temple police which gets him off of Siveo's ship. This reprieve doesn't last and, Silveo and Gerard must work together again, but this time Thessalyn joins him on his travels and acts as a buffer between Gerard and Silveo.

The audio book is narrated by Abigail Hilton and the various characters are brought to life by different voice actors. This setup makes the book interesting and enjoyable. I recommend that fans of the books and new comers to the world of Panamindorah will both enjoy the audio book.
